USCIS Form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship

  • Used to request a Certificate of Citizenship because you were born outside the United States to a U.S. citizen parent
  • Used to request a Certificate of Citizenship because you automatically became a citizen of the United States after birth but before age 18.
  • Not used to apply for citizenship. See Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.

It depends. If you were able to finalize the adoption in your child’s native country, you were probably issued an IH-3 or IR-3 visa. In these cases USCIS should automatically send you a Certificate of Citizenship for your child without any additional forms and expenses. On the other hand, adoptions that are completed in the U.S. for children that arrived with IH-4 or IR-4 visas do require you to request a Certificate of Citizenship with Form N-600.

The USCIS Form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship is also available directly from USCIS.
