On this Memorial Day CitizenPath would like to recognize an American hero. Marine Lance Cpl. Jose Gutierrez was one of the first U.S. service members killed in combat in Iraq, yet he was not even a citizen of the country for which he sacrificed his life.
Gutierrez came to the U.S. as a young undocumented immigrant from Guatemala with no parents. He hitchhiked on freight trains and surely walked many of the 2,000 miles between Guatemala and San Diego. He carried with him the dreams of becoming a U.S. citizen and launching a career as an architect. Continue reading
