USCIS Form I-817, Application for Family Unity Benefits

Family Unity Program benefits are provided for by the Immigration Act of 1990 (IMMACT 90) and the Legal Immigration Family Equity Act of 2000 (LIFE Act). Both IMMACT 90 and LIFE Act have provisions that provide for relief from deportation and the granting of employment authorization to eligible immigrants who are the spouses or unmarried children of a legalized alien holding temporary or permanent residence. Each act has different eligibility requirements. Form I-817 is used to file for Family Unity benefits from both acts.

If you plan to travel outside the United States temporarily, you must apply for advanced parole authorization by filing Form I-131, Application for Travel Document. Advance parole allows you to be paroled back into the United States when you return.

If you are granted Family Unity benefits, you will be authorized to stay in the United States for up to two years. You will also be provided an Employment Authorization Document (work permit) for the same period.
